Jinan Urban Balcony
How to regenerate an urban quarter into a three-dimensional landscape.
Conceived by Beta Realities in collaboration with LDI, the Jinan Urban Balcony is a new vision for residential and mixed-use quarters: Conceived as vertical neighborhoods the masterplan aims to create three-dimensional communities. This ambitious mixed-use residential embodies a holistic approach to community-building and sustainable living.
Spanning four distinct plots, the Jinan Urban Balcony is more than just a collection of buildings; it's a microcosm of modern life, where residential, commercial, and office spaces converge to create a dynamic and inclusive neighborhood. At its heart lies a commitment to fostering a pedestrian-friendly environment that embraces the city's rich ecology.

Jinan
A community-based public realm.
Sequenced courtyards, woven throughout the development, serve as intimate sanctuaries where residents can connect with nature on a daily basis. From shared streets to micromobility corridors, every element of the ground floor is designed to promote interaction and exploration. Waterways meander through the site, offering a direct link to Jinan's natural beauty and creating a sense of serenity amidst the bustling cityscape.
Creating a new vernacular.
Jinan Urban Balcony is a study in balance and harmony, where architecture and landscape merge into a vivid urban scape that is fully integrating the building’s ground level. Lifted building volumes and undulating roofscapes create a sense of lightness, while the façade's dynamic interplay of materials reflects the project's commitment to innovation and sustainability.

Breaking down the massing to a human scale, a shingled undulating roofscape is blending seamlessly into a vertical façade rhythm that expresses building tectonics to the façade. A porous ground floor with perimeter colonnade opens up the lightweight massing.
A three-dimensonal urban scape
A diverse range of outdoor spaces, including private balconies and shared rooftops, invite residents to engage with their surroundings and each other. Inside-out connections blur the boundaries between interior and exterior, while deep facades provide passive shading and a sense of privacy. Pluralistic and individual facades, constructed from modular components, offer a warm and natural expression of Jinan's heritage.

The urban balcony.
Vertical greens and timber balconies are attached as prefabricated scalable modules that allow for individualization: differentiation in material, shade, green integratrion and geometric detailing between the masterplan buildings becomes possible and creates diversity.

Facade and roofscapes as social interaction touchpoints.
Generous horizontal balconies to the South as well as vertical louvers to the East and West generate passive shading. Large open glazing to the North allow natural sunlight in the North facing rooms.

Performative facade articulations.
A diverse skyline of high- and lowpoints seems like an undulating roofscape is gently ‘landing’ on the rich ecology of the site, touching the ground lightly from the sky. As the sun sets on the Jinan Urban Balcony, the rooftops come alive with the shimmering imagery of lightweight feathers, evoking a sense of harmony with the natural world.
