BetaHood
Mobile and circular neighborhoods on-demand.
BetaHood is a joint venture project between Urban Beta, Beta Realities, Graadwies, ARUP, Bauhaus University Weimar and the Berlin City Mission that aims to create sustainable and participatory neighbourhoods from micro living units.
The ambition of these mixed-resident neighbourhoods is the reintegration of homeless people back into society. The project is therefore addressing social and considerate answers to macro trends such as urbanization, the rapid population growth, the rising gap between rich and poor, and the shift to greener cities in an increasingly service-based society.

BetaHood
Sustainable Neighborhoods On-Demand.
BetaHood is part of the New European Bauhaus initiative, initiated by the EU commission as part of the Green New Deal. BetaHood research on nomadic quarters is funded by the Federal Government of Germany with the “Zukunft Bau” (Future Construction) program.
BetaHood Configurator.
As part of the research project an easy-to access app was developed to allow multiple stakeholders and future users plan BetaHoods. The design algorithm can generate endless design variations, adapted to local sites. The tool uses AI and machine learning to create versions of optimized neighborhood configurations and lets the users freely configure and adapt the planning.

BetaHood
A flexible kit of parts.
Designed for disassembly, each spatial module can be arranged inside the neighborhoods. Applying rulesets for automation simplifies the planning process and gives information in real time.
BetaHood
Reintegrating homeless people.
The main purpose of offering homeless people a way to reintegrate into society is realized via a healthy mix of functions that all contribute to a circular business model developed with our partners. A first prototype neighborhood in Berlin is planned for 2024.
Movable quarters.
BetaHoods are designed as time based neighborhoods that can move. The base case is to activate brown and green fields with temporary buildings, that offer a flexible, healthy and participatory construction system.
